Ingredients
16 sheets phyllo dough
3 medium apples, finely chopped
1 cup walnuts, chopped
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup maple syrup
Instructions
1. Peel, core, and chop apples. Cook them with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a bit of butter until soft. Mix in walnuts.
2. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
3. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo in the bottom, brushing each with melted butter.
4. Spread a third of the apple mixture over the phyllo. Repeat twice more.
5. Top with 8 more buttered phyllo sheets.
6. Cut into diamonds or squares before baking.
7. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden.
8. While baking, warm the maple syrup gently.
9. Once baklava is done, pour warm maple syrup evenly over the top.
10. Let baklava sit for at least 4 hours or overnight to absorb syrup.
Notes
Let the syrup fully absorb before cutting to avoid soggy layers.
Use crisp, tart apples like Honeycrisp for the best flavor and texture contrast.
