Ingredients

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup brown sugar, packed

3 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

½ cup milk

4 cups apples, peeled and thinly sliced (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)

Optional: caramel sauce for drizzling

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch springform pan.

2. In a bowl, toss sliced apples with a bit of cinnamon and set aside.

3. Cream together butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.

5. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

6. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk.

7. Pour half the batter into prepared pan. Layer with half the apples. Repeat.

8. Bake for 50–60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

9. Cool slightly, then drizzle with caramel or dust with powdered sugar.

10. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor and texture.
