Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

0.5 cup black cocoa powder

1 cup granulated sugar

0.5 teaspoon baking soda

0.25 teaspoon salt

0.5 cup vegetable oil

0.5 cup buttermilk

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon vinegar

0.5 teaspoon black gel food coloring (optional)


Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with 12 liners.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, black cocoa, sugar, baking soda, and salt.

3. In another bowl, mix eggs, buttermilk, oil, vanilla, vinegar, and food coloring.

4. Combine wet and dry ingredients; mix until just combined.

5. Divide batter into liners, filling 2/3 full.

6. Bake 18–20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

7. Cool on a rack completely before frosting.

8. Frost with black buttercream and add sprinkles if desired.

Notes

For the deepest color, use black cocoa and black gel food coloring together.

Do not overmix the batter—this helps keep the cupcakes tender and fluffy.
