A rich and comforting dish, Dad’s Creamy Cheesy Au Gratin Potatoes features layers of tender potatoes smothered in a velvety cheese sauce and baked to golden perfection. This crowd-pleasing side dish is perfect for holiday gatherings or cozy family dinners.
Ingredients
4 large Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
3 tbsp butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups milk
½ cup heavy cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp paprika
2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant.
- Stir in flour and whisk continuously to form a roux. Slowly pour in milk and heavy cream, whisking until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in cheddar and Gruyère cheese until melted. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, then pour half of the cheese sauce over them. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle extra cheese on top, and bake uncovered for another 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.
