Ingredients

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)

1 ½ teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons sugar

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)

1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)

Extra flour or cornmeal for dusting

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: Mix warm water and sugar in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the Dough: Stir in flour, salt, and olive oil (if using) until a rough dough forms.
  3. Knead: Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1½ hours until doubled in size.
  5. Shape: Punch down and form into a loaf. Place on floured or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Second Rise: Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  7. Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding.
  8. Cool: Let cool on a wire rack for 20 minutes before slicing.
