4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 tsp dried)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
6 slices thick French bread, toasted
2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
