This easy recipe is ideal for beginners and seasoned bakers alike, offering a foolproof way to fill your kitchen with the aroma of freshly baked bread. Ingredients

2 cups warm water

2/3 cup granulated sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/4 cup vegetable oil

6 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until foamy, 5–10 minutes.

2. Add oil and salt, then gradually add flour until a dough forms.

3. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth.

4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1–1.5 hours.

5. Punch down, divide, and shape into 2 loaves. Place in greased pans.

6. Let rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffed.

7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding when tapped.

8. Brush with butter while warm if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, substitute half the oil with melted butter.

To freeze, cool completely, slice, and store in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months.
