Whether you’re planning a game day menu, looking for a quick appetizer idea, or need something bold and crispy on the side of your main dish, these onion rings are your go-to. Perfect for snacking, sharing, and dipping! This easy recipe fits into your rotation for snack ideas, quick appetizers, and even fun dinner ideas when paired with burgers or sandwiches.

Ingredients

1 large sweet onion

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup cornstarch

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup chilled sparkling water

1 egg

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

3 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

1. Peel and slice onion into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate and set aside the large ones.

2. In one bowl, mix 1/2 cup flour with salt and pepper for dredging.

3. In another bowl, whisk remaining 1/2 cup flour, cornstarch, baking powder, egg, and sparkling water until smooth.

4. Heat oil in a pot to 350°F (175°C).

5. Dredge each onion ring in flour, dip into batter, and shake off excess.

6. Optionally dredge in flour again for extra crisp.

7. Fry in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden.

8. Drain on paper towels and season with a pinch of salt.

9. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Make sure the sparkling water is ice-cold for maximum crispiness.

Don’t overcrowd the pot when frying; it drops the oil temperature.
