What sets this baked ziti apart? It’s that irresistible combination of creamy ricotta, gooey mozzarella, and a layer of sour cream for a luscious middle that melts into every bite. It tastes indulgent, yet it’s surprisingly simple to throw together, making it perfect for potlucks, family dinners, or meal prep.

What Kind of Pasta Should I Use?

Ziti pasta is the classic pick, with its tubular shape holding sauce like a champ. However, if you can’t find ziti, rigatoni or penne work beautifully too. What matters most is choosing a sturdy pasta that won’t fall apart when baked.

Ingredients for the Million Dollar Baked Ziti

  • Ziti Pasta – The base that holds all the rich, savory sauces and cheese.
  • Ground Beef or Italian Sausage – Adds hearty, savory depth to the sauce. You can also use a combo of both.
  • Marinara Sauce – A flavorful tomato base to coat the pasta and meat.
  • Ricotta Cheese – Adds a creamy, slightly tangy layer for that “million dollar” texture.
  • Sour Cream – The secret ingredient that adds richness and creaminess to the middle layer.
  • Mozzarella Cheese – For that gooey, stretchy top layer everyone loves.
  • Parmesan Cheese – Adds a salty, nutty kick that ties the flavors together.
  • Egg – Helps bind the ricotta mixture.
  • Italian Seasoning, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder – For classic seasoning flavor throughout.

How To Make the Million Dollar Baked Ziti

Step 1: Boil the Pasta

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the ziti just until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 2: Cook the Meat

In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef or sausage until fully cooked. Drain excess fat, then stir in marinara sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes to marry the flavors.

Step 3: Make the Cheese Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, sour cream, egg, parmesan, and seasonings. Stir until creamy and smooth.

Step 4: Layer It Up

In a 9×13-inch baking dish, start layering:

  • A layer of meat sauce on the bottom.
  • Half of the cooked pasta.
  • All of the ricotta-sour cream mixture.
  • Half of the mozzarella.
  • The rest of the pasta and meat sauce.
  • Finish with the remaining mozzarella and a sprinkle of parmesan.

Step 5: Bake to Perfection

Cover with foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

How to Serve and Store This Comforting Casserole

Million Dollar Baked Ziti is best served straight out of the oven with a big spoon and even bigger appetite. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing so the layers hold together. Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days. To reheat, use the oven or microwave until warmed through. It also freezes well for up to 2 months.
