Ingredients
2 cups finely chopped tart apples
1 cup raisins
1 cup currants
1/2 cup chopped candied citrus peel
1/3 cup suet or unsalted butter
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup apple cider or brandy
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 9-inch pie crusts (top and bottom)
1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine apples, raisins, currants, citrus peel, suet or butter, brown sugar, and spices.
2. Stir in the apple cider or brandy and bring the mixture to a simmer.
3. Cook for 30-40 minutes until thick and glossy, then let cool completely.
4. Roll out the bottom pie crust and place it into a 9-inch pie dish.
5. Pour the cooled filling into the crust and spread evenly.
6. Roll out the top crust and lay it over the pie. Crimp the edges and cut vents.
7. Brush the top with egg wash for golden color.
8. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 40–50 minutes until bubbly and golden.
9. Let cool for at least an hour before serving.
10. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
