Ingredients
1 cup warm water
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
2 1/2 cups bread flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
Instructions
1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Stir until dissolved, then sprinkle yeast on top. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Add flour, salt, and softened butter. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
5. Punch down dough and shape into a log. Place into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
6. Cover and let rise for another 30–45 minutes, until slightly above pan edge.
7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped.
8. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
Bread flour gives the best structure, but you can use all-purpose flour in a pinch.
Make sure the water is warm—not hot—to avoid killing the yeast.
