Description
Delicious Char Siu Chicken is one of those easy dinner ideas that feels exciting from the very first bite. The chicken turns out juicy, tender, and deeply flavorful, coated in a sticky sweet savory glaze with garlicky notes, warm five spice, and beautifully caramelized edges. It is a great choice for a quick dinner, meal prep, or food ideas when you want something better than takeout at home. Serve it with rice, noodles, or vegetables for a crowd pleasing easy recipe that fits right into your best dinner ideas collection.
Ingredients
2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs
1/4 cup hoisin sauce
3 tablespoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon red food coloring, optional
Instructions
1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, Chinese five spice, garlic, ginger, rice vinegar, sesame oil, black pepper, and red food coloring if using.
2. Place the chicken thighs in a large bowl or zip top bag and pour the marinade over them. Coat well, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to overnight.
3. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet or roasting pan with foil and place a rack on top if desired.
4. Arrange the marinated chicken in a single layer and roast for 25 to 30 minutes, brushing once or twice with extra marinade during cooking.
5. Broil for 2 to 4 minutes at the end until the glaze is bubbling and the edges are lightly charred.
6. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For the juiciest result, I like to use chicken thighs because they stay tender and develop better caramelized edges than chicken breast.
Watch the broiler closely during the final minutes so the glaze darkens and bubbles without burning.
