Description

These Heart-Shaped Chocolate Cupcakes are the kind of dessert that instantly makes any table feel more special. They are rich, moist, and packed with deep chocolate flavor, then finished with a smooth chocolate frosting that pipes beautifully on top. I love making them for Valentine’s Day, date nights, birthdays, or whenever I want an easy recipe that looks festive and homemade. They fit right in with dessert ideas, baking ideas, party treats, holiday desserts, and sweet food ideas for any celebration.

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

1/2 cup whole milk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup hot coffee or hot water

1/2 cup unsalted butter softened

2 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 tablespoons heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons pink sprinkles or freeze-dried strawberry pieces

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. To create a heart shape, place a small marble or a tightly rolled piece of foil between the pan and each liner on one side.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.

3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

4. Slowly pour in the hot coffee or hot water and stir gently. The batter will be thin.

5. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.

6. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

7. Let the cupcakes cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

8. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, and vanilla extract, then beat until the frosting is fluffy and smooth.

9. Pipe or spread the frosting onto the cooled cupcakes, following the heart shape if desired.

10. Finish with pink sprinkles or freeze-dried strawberry pieces before serving.

Notes

For the cleanest heart shape, set the marble or foil in place before filling the liners so the cupcakes bake with a defined indentation.

Make sure the cupcakes are completely cool before frosting them, or the chocolate frosting will soften too much and lose its shape.
